The Overstitch procedure is the term used to describe the placement of sutures during a variety of medical procedures including treating gastrointestinal defects and complications and treating obesity. A flexible endoscope is lowered down the patient’s throat and sutures are strategically placed without the use of incisions.
Is Apollo OverStitch Used During Endoscopic Sleeve Gastroplasty (ESG)?
Yes, ESG, the non-surgical weight loss procedure is also performed using the Apollo ESG System™ (previously OverStitch Endoscopic Suturing System) as it offers easier and more precisely targeted placement of the sutures. During ESG, the patient’s stomach is refolded and shaped into a small pouch-like sleeve and then held in that position through the use of sutures. The smaller stomach size helps to control meal portions and facilitates weight loss.
How Can OverStitch Help Revise A Gastric Bypass?
A gastric bypass, also known as Roux-en-Y is a surgical procedure that helps obese patients lose weight using two types of techniques:
- Restrictive technique works by reducing the size of a patient’s stomach so they can only eat a small amount during one sitting, they feel “full” longer because the food they eat takes longer to digest;
- Malabsorptive technique works through alterations that are done to the digestive system so not all the calories ingested are absorbed and stored by the body.

Why Would A Patient Have Overstitch?
There are many reasons why a patient may gain weight after gastric bypass surgery, but one of the most frequently found issues is the gradual stretching out of the upper portion or opening to the stomach. The stomach pouch can also stretch out and increase the amount of available space.
This often allows the patient to eat larger portions of food, as well as to eat more frequently because they do not feel “full” for as long as they did right after they underwent gastric bypass surgery.
The OverStitch procedure can correct this dilation and decrease the size of the opening to the stomach or reduce the size of the stomach pouch, restoring both to their smaller sizes comparable to after their initial weight loss surgery.
How Does The OverStitch Procedure Work?

During OverStitch, an endoscope (a long flexible tube) is lowered down a patient’s throat carrying a specialized suturing device and other tiny instruments used to complete the procedure. The surgeon uses these special instruments to suture and tighten the opening to the stomach and to reduce the size of the stomach pouch if needed.
After the OverStitch procedure, the patient’s stomach capacity is restored to the smaller size it was when they had their initial bariatric surgery.

What Is The Recovery Like After The OverStitch Procedure?
You will need someone to drive you home after your OverStitch procedure and most bariatric surgeons recommend you do not drive for about 5 days post-procedure. Most patients recover from the procedure in about a week.
If your job requires significant physical activity or heavy lifting your surgeon will provide instructions as to when you are safe to return. Much like just after your gastric bypass surgery, dietary instructions will be provided for you to follow in the first few weeks.
Who Is A Candidate For Overstitch Revision?
Not every patient will be a candidate for the OverStitch procedure but a consultation with your bariatric surgeon will be able to determine your eligibility. Some reasons a patient may not be a good candidate for OverStitch include:
- Weight regain is not due to enlargement of the stomach pouch or opening of the stomach;
- The patient has a medical condition that would prevent them from having the OverStitch procedure such as GERD;
- The patient has abnormal narrowing of the esophagus.
