What Is An Anal Fistula?

An anal fistula is a tunnel-like abnormality that runs from an abscessed area in the anal canal to an opening in the skin near the anus. Anal fistulas usually form because an anal gland has developed an infection that causes an abnormal tunnel to form between the colon and the anal canal running under the skin and out through a hole in the skin near the anus.

What Causes Anal Fistulas?

Usually, anal fistulas are caused by anal glands that have become clogged, infected, and then abscessed. Although not very common, anal fistulas can also be caused by conditions such as:
  • Diverticulitis;
  • Crohn’s disease;
  • Sexually transmitted diseases;
  • Radiation therapy;
  • Trauma/injury/surgery;
  • Tuberculosis;
  • Cancer.

Symptoms & Signs of Anal Fistulas

Usually, anal fistulas are caused by anal glands that have become clogged, infected, and then abscessed. Although not very common, anal fistulas can also be caused by conditions such as:
  • Pain with bowel movements;
  • Pain and swelling around the anus;
  • Frequent anal abscesses;
  • Fever, chills, and fatigue;
  • Drainage of blood or pus with a bad odor from an opening around the anus.

How Are Fistulas Diagnosed?

A proctologist or medical specialist can usually determine the presence of fistulas by viewing the anal region. MRI imaging is also helpful for identifying the fistula tracts as well as any smaller abscesses that are present.

Treatment For Anal Fistulas

Surgery

Historically, the only treatment to eliminate fistulas was a complex surgical procedure. 52% of patients experienced unpleasant side effects including damage to the sphincter muscle (the ring-like muscle that keeps the anus closed) resulting in incontinence issues (bowel dysfunction)

Non-surgical Therapy

Fistula-tract laser closure FiLaC® is a non-invasive treatment to eliminate anal fistulas without surgery or any risk of damage to the sphincter muscle.

How Does FiLaC® Work To Treat Anal Fistulas?

Illustration: FISTULA-TRACT LASER CLOSURE WITH FILAC
During the FiLaC® procedure, a small thin laser probe is used to destroy the fistula tissue but does not damage any nearby tissue. This laser probe is very flexible and it is threaded into the fistula tract and then withdrawn as laser energy is being emitted. While the FiLaC® laser probe is being pulled back slowly the tract is being closed. This eliminates the need for a surgeon to try to tediously extract the unwanted fistula tissue during a long complex surgery.
