If you struggle with gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), then you know fully well what a strain it can be. Persistent pain and discomfort in the form of heartburn or acid indigestion can impede your quality of life in significant ways. Thankfully, there are a number of clinical interventions that can minimize the effects of GERD, and one that we’re happy to offer at IBI Healthcare Institute is transoral incisionless fundoplication (TIF).
TIF is a preferred treatment option for a number of reasons. Not only can it provide lasting relief from GERD symptoms, but it’s all done through the mouth, which means you don’t have to worry about incision marks on your abdomen. If you’re curious to learn more about TIF, or to discover whether you’re a qualified candidate, we welcome you to contact IBI Healthcare Institute at your next convenience.
How it Works
The procedure is done with a specially designed endoscope. It’s placed in the stomach by way of the mouth, meaning no surgical incisions are needed. Once the endoscope is in place, the stomach is inflated. The scope is then maneuvered so that it provides the surgeon with a clear view of the area between the esophagus and the stomach.
The doctor will then pull tissue down from the gastroesophageal valve, wrapping that tissue to make a new valve. The new valve is fastened together and fused to the tissue in your stomach.
Note that it’s this valve that tends to be the culprit in GERD; if the valve is too weak, it may cause stomach acid to flow back into the esophagus, which is what causes so much pain and discomfort.

The Benefits of TIF
This procedure has a number of benefits, starting with the fact that it’s typically done on an outpatient basis. That means you can be home to rest and recover just a few hours after your surgery, without the need for hospitalization.
Another significant benefit is that the results of TIF tend to be long-lasting; not only that, but most patients who have this procedure done will never again need to use medications to keep acid reflux at bay.
And, as we’ve noted above, the procedure does not require any surgical incisions to be made, which makes it ideal for anyone seeking a fully scar-free treatment option.
Are You Eligible for TIF?
So, does all of this mean that TIF is the right option for you? We would generally recommend TIF to anyone who can check off each of the following boxes:
- You have been diagnosed with GERD.
- You are looking for a solution that doesn’t leave any scars.
- You are generally in good health and don’t have any disorders that could impede your body’s ability to heal.
As you consider whether TIF is the best option for you, we encourage you to come meet with us, chat with us, and learn a little bit more about how the procedure works. Contact IBI Healthcare Institute whenever you’re ready to set up an appointment.
