Protect Yourself Against Breast Cancer

As the calendar turns to October, shades of pink can be seen all over from NFL games, to local events, to Susan G. Komen 3-Day fundraisers. Recognized all over the world, Breast Cancer Awareness Month draws attention to the early detection and treatment of this disease. Think of your mother, sister, daughter, friend, coworker, neighbor – or maybe even yourself. When it comes to their – or your – health, it’s important to stay vigilant and a part of the conversation.

Cancer screenings are very important because they can help find cancer at an early stage, even before symptoms appear. Used to identify abnormal tissues, screenings can include laboratory tests, imaging procedures, genetic tests and physical exams.

According to the American Cancer Society, women ages 40-44 should begin considering annual breast cancer screenings with mammograms at their well-woman exam. However, by age 45, women are encouraged to complete a mammogram each year. Besides a formal exam, women should also perform personal exams monthly at home and report any changes to how their chest normally looks and feels.

Regardless of the month, all women should have a healthcare provider that puts their concerns and health first. At IBI Healthcare Institute, we offer personal and sensitive care for women of all ages. For more information, please visit our website or call 678.466.6760.
